SEPTEMBER 2017 WET NEWS 3 C ontracts have been awarded for the development of an advanced anaerobic dig- estion plant near Stoke-on-Trent that will include a type of thermal hydrolysis never used before in the UK. Doosan Enpure has been awarded the design and build contract worth more than £20M for the project at Severn Trent Water's Strongford Sewage Treatment Works. Doosan will be working collaboratively with its partners, North Midland Construction (NMC Nomenca), and Dutch technology provider Sustec, which will supply its Continuous Thermal Hydrolysis Plant (cTHP) – Turbotec – for the ˆ rst time in the UK. Strongford serves Newcastle- under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent, and is a strategically important project for Severn Trent as it demonstrates its commitments to reduce carbon footprint by 10% through AMP6, and to put 25% of its biosolids through a process that creates an enhanced product. Key objectives for the project are to maximise biogas Contract awarded for UK- rst 'continuous' THP plant production, reduce sludge volumes, produce an enhanced digestate and achieve the lowest TOTEX cost; it comes against the backdrop of Ofwat's initiative to open up the sludge market. As a regional sludge treatment centre, the new AAD plant will need to handle indigenous and imported thickened raw sludge (primary and secondary), imported raw sludge cake and imported industrial trade e– uent. The plant will be capable of processing 80 tonnes of dry solids per day (tds/d) on average, with a peak of 94tds/d, and producing a thermally hydrolysed sludge with a target dry solids content of 10% w/w. To achieve such an output, the works will include imported screened sludge cake reception, indigenous sludge storage, pre- cTHP screening & dewatering, Sustec Turbotec cTHP, Doosan Puriser pasteurisation, upgrading of existing mesophilic anaerobic digesters, liquors treatment, steam generation, upgraded biogas storage and a new waste gas ž are. The enhanced biogas generated will be utilised by the Ÿ Doosan Enpure 'excited' to be working with Dutch technology provider Sustec on strategic project to maximise biogas production. Reaction to Jacobs' mega-bucks acquisition of CH2M Hill, creating a global super-consultant. W essex Water is tunnelling beneath the M4 motorway from the Three Brooks Local Nature Reserve in Bradley Stoke, South Gloucestershire, as part of the £15M Frome Valley relief sewer scheme. The sewer will provide additional capacity for new developments in the area, diverting wastewater ž ows from South Gloucestershire to Bristol STW in Avonmouth. The company is constructing a 5km long, 1.8m diameter pipe to run from Iron Acton, north of Frampton Cotterell, and then towards Bradley Stoke. Project manager Mike Bryant said: "We are currently sinking other shaª s on the job, and we Wessex Water goes tunnelling will be mobilising additional tunnel boring machines around the Winterbourne and Iron Acton areas in the coming months. Open excavation in rock around Iron Acton is proving to be tough but we are achieving the estimated outputs per day." More consolidation in engineering consulting world (Jacobs & CH2M).
