24 WET NEWS SEPTEMBER 2017 INSIGHT Odour control M ayfield Dairy in Homewood, Alabama is owned and operated by Dean Foods Company, one of US's largest processors of fluid milk products, marketed under 50 local and regional brands and private labels, employing more than 16,000 employees at 70 manufacturing facilities throughout the US. The Homewood dairy manufactures fluid milk products and ice cream for multiple corporate brands and private labels. The dairy owns and contract operates an onsite wastewater facility for treatment of the dairy manufacturing process water. The plant is designed to treat 300,000 gallons per day containing high organic loads commonly associated with milk based wastewater. The entire treatment system is located indoors thus creating a highly odorous and corrosive environment. Cocktail Due to the proximity of the dairy to local neighbourhoods, odours were of concern and the existing facility was equipped with a conventional extraction, systems around the world, mainly in Europe but also in the Middle East and Australasia. Terminodour is suitable for abating odours on a wide range of applications including municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, food processing, municipal solids waste, rendering and energy from waste. Attacking Ionisation technology is based on the production of highly ionised air containing hundreds of thousands of ions (O+ and O-) delivered through ductwork into the building. The ionised air reacts by actively attacking the contaminates in the air and oxidising odours, resulting in a reduction in corrosive gases and a more pleasant working environment. Ambient air is drawn into the Terminodour air handling units (AHUs), which are positioned external to the building. The air is filtered by washable filters and drawn into the reactor section where the air is ionised. The ionised air is then drawn across the fans and distributed throughout the building via a range of ductwork and perforated diffusers. When the negatively charged oxygen ions collide with positively charged odour molecules an oxidation reaction commences. The diffusers were deliberately located at the mid to lower level of the building since the scrubber extraction point is at the top of the building. The duct location and volumetric flow allows for longer contact times that enhances the oxidation of the odours. • The Terminodour systems main benefits include: • Low capital and running costs • Minimal maintenance • No water or chemicals required • No media to replace or dispose of • Ionising tubes can be recycled when out of life (1-2 years) • Reduced corrosion • Quarterly service intervals The Terminodour ionisation system is ideal for large volume low load applications as found in waste reception halls, but it • Maintaining existing equipment three times a year to ensure effective odour treatment was proving costly for a US dairy.
