PRODUCTS & SERVICES Eco-drive fleet LondonWaste has taken delivery of its new fleet of Mercedes- Benz eight-wheelers. Fitted with Hyva hook-loading equipment, the seven Arocs 3240Ks will each collect and deliver up to 15 tonnes of materials, including cardboard, wood, hardcore, plastics, paper and green waste, as well as furniture and other items for recycling or reuse in the north London area. £4m for Keenan Keenan Recycling has secured a £4m extension to its waste processing partnership with Suez Environnement in north- east Scotland. The contract to process food and garden waste from households in Aberdeen has been extended by a further four years, with the option to extend by one year. Keenan Recycling is subcontracted by Suez Environnement to handle Software cleansing Preston City Council says that its Mayrise Waste Management software from Yotta has helped to reduce missed collection reports by 70% and improved street cleanliness. Reports of graffiti are down from 14% to just over 2% and general detritus levels have fallen by more than half. Litter and flyposting reports are down, as are those for missed collections. New AD plant UTS Biogas has successfully concluded negotiations in order to deliver a turnkey anaerobic digestion (AD) solution for the Cardiff Food Waste Treatment project. UTS sub-contract to Kelda Organic Energy, which is delivering the 20-year green and food waste treatment solution for Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan. Construction of the 35,000 tonnes per annum facility Murray Browns' MRF The new BlueMac MRF at North Yorkshire waste and recycling firm Murray Browns is "performing well". The system was designed and tailor- made not only to produce the required specific clean saleable recyclables, but also to fit neatly in the seven-acre site and allow materials handling to be carried out safely and efficiently around the new plant. CK Services Oadby & Wigston Borough Council, in Leicestershire, has appointed CK Services to carry out wheelie bin distribution for its garden waste collection service. So far, 11,500 wheeled bins have been distributed to households keen to have their green waste collected for composting. The borough previously used re-usable sacks for collections. Data logger Axion has developed a data logger specifically for continuous process plants that helps operators understand and eliminate causes of downtime, potentially saving them thousands of pounds of year. The monitoring device has already cut downtime by 50% at one plant. Capable of working with existing programmable logic controllers from different manufacturers, the logger provides is expected to start this month. It has been specifically designed for food waste, with upfront separation of organics from non- digestable materials such as paper, glass and plastics. "This contract is a reinforcement of our commitment to meet the statutory Welsh Government zero waste targets," said Cllr Bob Derbyshire from City of Cardiff council. hard data of a plant's downtime and its causes, enabling operators to analyse faults and focus on systems improvement. Overall equipment effectiveness can then be optimised through complex data analyses of variables such as uptime, throughput rate and quality over an extended period of time. For a multi-site operation the logger also makes it possible to compare sites and performance. the organic fraction of the Aberdeen City Council waste management contract. Each year, around 13,700 tonnes of kitchen and garden waste from household collections and 2,500 tonnes of garden waste from the five HWRCs will be processed. New Mach sorter Machinex Group has unveiled its new optical sorting machine, the Mach Hyspec. The high speed, short wave infra-red hyperspectral detection system takes less than one millisecond to analyse the belt. The models available can detect different material types, such as plastics and also fibre products, including carton containers and wood by grade. With the optical sorter there is the option of colour recognition as well as a metal detector. The sorter can be used in different types of material recovery facilities, such as single-stream, construction and demolition and municipal solid waste. The risk of fire has also been reduced to a minimum using unique, patent-pending light system technology, creating diffused light. July 2015 Local Authority Waste & Recycling 25
