Utility Week Keynote: Outside-In Every utility company is unique and each utility sector has its discrete challenges – but consensus is rising that there's a great deal that utilities have in common and untapped potential to share knowledge, best practice and expertise. 5 I n addition to the free seminar programmes covering operational and technical challenges in water, energy and pan-utility environments Utility Week Live off ers the chance to attend a unique keynote conference event for senior utilities executives. The Outside-In Keynote agenda promises brilliant contributions from successful leaders working outside utilities. The programme promotes knowledge sharing and inspiration, opening the minds of senior utilities professionals to lessons from beyond the boundaries of the sector. The three day keynote conference will address the following themes: Day 1: Change: For utilities in 2015, only one thing is for certain: change. For the people running water, gas and electricity businesses, the next 12 months will see transformation on an unprecedented scale. New regulatory regimes in energy networks and water; the CMA inquiry into energy retail; a general election that is too close to call; and the introduction of competition to the non-domestic water market are all game-changers. New price controls, an infrastructure revolution and the CMA electricity market inquiry, accompanied by a mangling in the national media. It wouldn't be going too far to say that today's energy sector is in the middle of the most radical shake up in a generation or more. At Utility Week Live, we'll attempt to make sense of the tangle of interconnecting risks, challenges and opportunities before energy professionals today. Whether you want to understand how to respond to the RIIO regime, fi nd out how the introduction of an electricity system architect might aff ect your operations, get demand side management working or transform you engagement with consumers, the energy seminar programme at Utility Week Live will meet your needs. So said Sophocles almost two and half thousand years ago, yet it's a lesson utilities are still struggling to come to terms with today. There's no doubt that trust in utilities is in the doldrums and with trust in big business more widely making negative headlines, raising public confi dence is going to be a tough haul requiring cultural as well as technology innovation. Speakers on trust will include: Andrew McMillan, former head of customer service, John Lewis and Simon Hay, chief executive, dunnhumby. Day 3: Resilience: Ensuring system and organisational resilience is a complex task – and an evolving one which demands constant awareness of manifold interconnected risks. For utilities, understanding the interplay of these risks is fundamental to the ability to sustain supply. In short, society and the economy – not to mention their own prosperity – rely on utilities' resilience. Speakers on resilience will include: Lord Deben, chair, Committee on Climate Change and Steve Cowley, director, Culham Centre of Fusion Energy. Tackling cross cutting themes such as big data, urbanisation and innovation, the pan utility agenda will arm utilities professionals for the future and champion collaborative problem solving.
